Repentance of Sin

E-mail Print PDF

INTRODUCTION

2nd Corinthians 7:10-12

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.

Ecclesiastes 7:3
Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart.

In my studies with those who are seeking God.  I often notice a difference in the level of conviction and overall love of the would-be disciple that is largely based on how effective I am in showing the person their sin.  I make it my goal to be patient as possible, so that the individual sees the seriousness of their sin.  As we go through Galatians 5:19 I use personal examples and make their actions directly effect someone close to them.  "What if these were my daughters," I'd ask.  The mood changes accordingly and brokenness and a sorrowful heart soon sets in.  If I don't see this brokenness I am very hesitant to baptize such a person.  They have yet to gain true repentance and their baptism would be worthless.
